More Dubai students sit British-curriculum exams than any other system. According to KHDA, 37% of the 387,441 students in Dubai's private schools follow the UK curriculum (2024-25). For most of them, IGCSE or GCSE results in Year 11 decide which A-Level or IB subjects they can choose, and that shapes university options.
This guide explains how IGCSE and GCSE exams work, when to start preparing, where students lose the most marks, and how 1-to-1 online tutoring with a UK-qualified tutor can help. If you already know what you need, message us on WhatsApp and we will match a tutor, usually within 24 to 48 hours.
IGCSE vs GCSE: what Dubai parents need to know
Both are two-year courses usually taken in Year 10 and Year 11, ending with exams at about age 16. The difference is who sets them:
- GCSE is the qualification taken in England, graded 9 to 1. Some Dubai schools follow it directly.
- IGCSE is the international version. The main boards in Dubai are Cambridge International (Cambridge IGCSE) and Pearson Edexcel (International GCSE). Oxford AQA also offers one.
Knowing the exact board matters, because each has its own specification, past papers and mark schemes. A tutor preparing a Cambridge student with Edexcel papers wastes valuable revision time.
IGCSE and GCSE at a glance
- Grading: 9 (highest) to 1 on the numerical scale. Cambridge IGCSE also offers the traditional A* to G scale, depending on the school.
- Grade guide: a 7 is broadly equivalent to an A, a 4 to a C (a "standard pass"), and a 9 sits above the old A*.
- Exam sessions: Cambridge runs May/June and October/November series (plus February/March in India). Edexcel International GCSE runs June and November.
- Number of subjects: most Dubai students take 7 to 10, usually including English, Maths and at least one science.
- Tiers: many subjects have Core/Foundation and Extended/Higher papers. The tier caps the highest grade available, so the choice matters.
Where IGCSE students lose the most marks
From working with students across Dubai, our tutors see the same patterns again and again:
- Ignoring command words. "Describe", "explain" and "evaluate" are marked differently. A correct fact in the wrong format can score zero.
- Not using mark schemes. Students who only answer past papers, without checking how examiners award marks, keep repeating the same mistakes.
- Weak foundations in Maths. Algebra and ratio gaps from Year 8 and 9 hold back Physics, Chemistry and Economics too.
- Running out of time. Long-answer questions at the end of English and science papers carry many marks. Timed practice fixes this.
- Leaving revision to the mocks. Two years of content cannot be revised in six weeks.
When to start IGCSE or GCSE tutoring
- Year 9: ideal for closing Maths and English gaps before the course begins.
- Start of Year 10: the best time for most students. Weekly lessons keep pace with school and build good habits early.
- Year 11, before mocks: focused topic repair and timed past papers.
- Final term: exam technique, revision plans and confidence. Even a few targeted sessions can help.

Frequently asked questions
Do you teach both Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE?
Yes. Tutors are matched to your child's board so lessons follow the right specification, past papers and mark schemes.
What grade is a pass in IGCSE?
On the 9 to 1 scale, a 4 is generally treated as a standard pass and a 7 as roughly equivalent to an A. Sixth forms often ask for a 6 or 7 in the subjects a student wants to continue.
Is online tutoring as effective as home tutoring?
For most students, yes. Lessons are live and 1-to-1 on an interactive whiteboard, and every session is recorded for revision, which home tutoring cannot offer.
Can my child switch from Core to Extended with tutoring?
Often, if gaps are closed early. The decision rests with the school, but tutoring can show whether a student is ready for the higher tier.
How quickly can lessons start?
Most Dubai families start within 24 to 48 hours of registering.
